University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology Partners with CCRF to Pursue Shared Value Opportunities

University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology signs collaboration agreement with Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation to pursue shared value opportunities

Agreement creates a framework for research collaboration in musculoskeletal (MSK) health

The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology and the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation (CCRF) have established a new partnership to explore research opportunities and support future collaboration. The partnership brings together the Faculty of Kinesiology’s expertise in human movement, health and mobility with CCRF’s commitment to supporting high impact research and building research capacity.

For Dr. Nick Holt, PhD, dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, the partnership reflects the importance of bringing organizations together around shared research interests.

“Strong partnerships are essential to advancing research and innovation. We are pleased to work with the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation and look forward to exploring opportunities that will strengthen discovery, collaboration and real-world impact.”

The agreement provides a foundation for UCalgary and CCRF to build connections, explore shared research interests and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Dr. Walter Herzog, PhD, professor and co-director of the Human Performance Lab in the Faculty of Kinesiology, has previously worked with CCRF on research examining the forces produced during high speed, low amplitude spinal manipulation, including cervical spine treatments and the resulting stresses and strains on cervical tissues. Reflecting on this work, Herzog says, “The support from the chiropractic community in general, and CCRF specifically, has been instrumental in advancing our knowledge of the biomechanics of spinal manipulation and in the scientific training and education of chiropractic professionals.” CCRF and the Chiropractic Association of Alberta have also supported Herzog’s research in back biomechanics since he joined UCalgary in 1985.

“We’re thrilled to partner with this globally recognized faculty to mutually enrich our networks,” says Dr. Kirsten Baxter, DC, CCRF governance chair and Alberta chiropractic leader. “Together, we’ll expand our funding capacity to advance high impact science in support of Canadian athletes of all ages and abilities.”

Both organizations will spend the coming months identifying shared research priorities and exploring opportunities to collaborate.

About the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation (CCRF)

For 50 years, CCRF has worked with researchers and partners to advance MSK health and related areas of well-being for all Canadians. With the generous support of its stakeholders, the foundation invests in high-impact research and builds research capacity through grant awards, networking and collaboration. As Canada’s only national chiropractic research funding organization, CCRF supports research that complements the work of government and institutional funders, delivering societal benefits that extend beyond academia.
